ANDREW’S FRIEND, POLICE Captain Frank Morgan, tucked the tiny microphone into the top of her bra. After it was in the proper position, he stepped back. “Just carry on a normal conversation. I know you’re nervous but we need to hear Margaret say what she wants in exchange for her signing the custody of her daughters over to you. That’s very important. We can’t arrest her for extortion unless she spells it out so even the densest juror will understand that she’s shaking you down for your inheritance in exchange for her daughters. I don’t want her getting released on a technicality. You can’t say it for her. Just refuse to sign anything until she tells you verbatim that she’s asking for your inheritance in exchange for her daughters.”

Cindy chewed on her bottom lip and looked over at Andrew. Her heart slipped a fraction when he grinned in support. After leaving the restaurant that first day, he asked if she would take him to his parents instead of to his apartment. Once there, they insisted that she and the girls stay with them until Margaret was no longer a threat.

The loud noises coming from the living room was Andrew’s father in the living room pretending to be a horse while letting each twin take a turn riding on his back around the room. The wonderful smells filling each room were his mother was in the kitchen cooking another wonderful meal. Being there with Andrew and his parents had reminded her how it had once been once upon a time before her evil stepmother had stolen the happiness away. But of course as soon as the meeting with Margaret was over, Cindy would return with her sisters to her grandmother’s old house and they would settle back into their old lives as if nothing had ever happened. It wouldn’t be easy but moving onward and forward was what she did best.

Andrew crossed the room over and with one finger lifted her chin so she had to look him in the eyes. “There’s to worry about. Frank and I will only be two booths away. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

She swallowed and nodded. “I’m okay. No one wants her to go to jail any more than I do.”
